Freedom

When we are caught in problems, in pain, thought breeds an idea or feeling which is “the opposite” of pain, of constraints: freedom. So there is the idea of “freedom” over there, somewhere, and I must get there by doing many things over here, in the field of bondage. Freedom in then the result, the reward that lies at the end of the process.

listen to the whole murmur of it

This is a short statement by Krishnamurti on the ending of sorrow from his book The Only Revolution:

“See the map of sorrow not with the eyes of memory. Listen to the whole murmur of it; be of it, for you are both the observer and the observed. Then only can sorrow end.”

Krishnamurti, The only Revolution, p. 100

Krishnamurti states that sorrow will only end when we there is no resistance to it and when we do not create any escape from it. Much can be spoken about this, however it is something that each of us must experiment with. Then we may come upon the particular balance of left and and right brain activity that allows the clear observation of the whole scenario inside of us when we are in sorrow of any kind. Then, if we are not distracted and our mind is not fragmented, sorrow ends.

the sensitivity of the heart

Today I am being torn apart by the aggression in our life. It is always just below the surface. We label it nobly, and so we are able to deny it. We say ‘I am irritated’ but it is aggression we feel. We say ‘Look at it my way, I do it this way” and actually we have a judgment of the other and I am thinking ‘Why is the other person so caught up in dogmas and concepts?’. We think ‘That person’s behavior is irresponsible’ and below the surface there is the division between my sphere and his or hers which is the seed of violence. Where is the sensitivity of my heart that is generous enough to allow each to live their own way even when it may look quite insane to me. Especially when their way of life doesn’t threaten mine or harm me. Yes, I am caught in symbols, in words, in platitudes of thought. Seeing this I feel deep sadness. Continue reading

for the movement is the mind itself

In this passage Krishnamurti elaborates on the topic “the observer is the observed” in a slightly different way. It is not the mind that moves and ‘has thoughts’ but rather “the movement is the mind itself”. The world we perceive is simply the mind-movement that conjures up “pictures of name and form, the person who sees, the screen upon which he sees and the light by which he sees. He himself is all of these.” (Ramana) Thus our endeavor to find ‘the deeper meaning’ of all of this only serves to increase our confusion and the adherence to romantic illusions.

rich in quietness

Krishnamurti in conversation with a young man:

K: The lark and the eagle in their flight leave no mark; the scientist leaves a mark, as do all specialists. You can follow them step by step and add more steps to what they have found and accumulated; and you know, more or less, where their accumulation is leading. But truth is not like that; it is really a pathless land; it may be at the next curve of the road, or a thousand miles away. You have to keep going and then you will find it beside you. But if you stop and trace out a way for another to follow, or a design for your own way of life, it will never come near you.

point of severance

::

To take in all that is happening – including my reactions to what is happening (like, dislike, irritation, impatience, anger, sadness, hurt, joy, elation, the ego wanting recognition, etc. etc.) WITHOUT any reaction to my reactions – that is the POINT OF SEVERANCE. At that point I refrain from feeding the age-old dynamic of offend-defend, which is the vrtti-vortex dynamic. This dynamic is our bondage. Continue reading

the wake of the ship

::

Thought is unable to meet the actual. Why? Because thought is only a recording of impressions that the living energy stream of the NOW left in its wake. It is like the wake of a large ocean liner when compared to the ship itself: it is merely the trace of the ship’s movement.  Thought is a movement of the brain that has significance. The significance is in relation to my life and results from the brain’s capacity for bringing into correlation myriad factors that are relevant to the thinking entity, in this case me. The brain developed into what it is by identifying elements in the environment that are painful and also those that are pleasurable. That is its default program. Continue reading

thought builds images

::

The thought of image being resistance is worth exploring. I see how the constant flux of energy get ‘caught’ in what we call ‘image’, just like the vrtti-vortex creates form in the otherwise formless flow of the river of energy/consciousness and the ‘dust-devil’ creates form in the smooth, formless flow of the air. the ‘me’ imploded upon itself

::

There was a sea of hot turbulence below him. Fiery whirlpools made up its surface. Like a huge container with impermeable and invisible walls the consciousness of humanity was caught in a prison of its own making. This entire sea with its myriad vortexes, each spinning insanely around itself, was carried by an immense stream: the cosmic Amazon of limitless space and silence. Each vortex with its own “me” center intersected and mixed with the others, creating dizzying interference and more turbulence. Continue reading
