“Questioner: Why did I take this form?
Nisargadatta: Because you were a fool. If you had known anything about it, you would not have come into this world.
Q: First I didn’t’ have any form is that so?
N: Yes, even now you don’t have any form. It is not your shape, it is the shape of the seed.
Q: Isn’t it the nature of the seed that it grows, like a tree grows out of a seed?
N: It is its nature.
Q: So I am not to blame. The seed must be foolish.
N: Because the seed is foolish it has come like this. The seed is the original foolish state, yet what big titles are given to that seed. The seed is transient, and the whole world is full of the seeds. All the five elements, all the objective world, is in that seed. You are not the seed – you are the observer of the seed.
For many centuries the Western people were not interested in spiritual matters, but now they have realized that, in spite of all their riches, they cannot get real peace, so they are searching for the truth now. The nearer you get to the truth, the more you lose interest in the worldly affairs. Such a one will not have any particular interest in the world, but will act like an ordinary person.
The sum and substance of spirituality is nothing but to come to a decision, make a judgment, about the Self, God and the world. – what is it? You must first dispose of this question.
This world is filled up with selfishness due to your association with the body. Once you know what these principles are, then you dissolve the personality, and in the process that selfishness vanishes because you are no longer an individual.
Q: How can I be in my true state and lose my fear?
N: You are already in your true state. Because of the mind, duality comes in and therefore you are afraid. The association with the body and mind is because of the love for the body-mind; that is going to go away, therefore everyone is afraid of death.
Q: The world is given to me by my senses. When you go beyond that state of ‘I Am-ness’ do you experience the world?
N: There is no question of going beyond. I was never born, will never die. Whatever is – is all the time. Going beyond is only an idea meant to remove all other ideas you have accumulate. You think about birth. Do you know anything about your birth?
Q: No, I do not know that I am born. I feel that I am not really born, and yet the world seems so real.
N: Do not worry about the world. First start from here: the ‘I Am,’ and then find out what is the world. Find out the nature of this ‘I.’
Q: Why find out about the ‘I’ which is not real?
N: It is the seed from which everything comes out. If the seed is not there, the universe is not. How have you come into this so-called objective world? Here everything will be wiped out. I invite you, in your own interest, to go home.”

One might get the impression that it makes no sense to do anything if it was foolish to incarnate into the world in the first place. The last lines, however, give us a clue as to what he is pointing to in terms of our life:
“Q: Why find out about the ‘I’ which is not real?
N: It is the seed from which everything comes out. If the seed is not there, the universe is not. How have you come into this so-called objective world?”
Nisargadatta is showing us here the way out of the illusion we are caught in. The question: how have we come into this so-called objective world? includes the inquiry into the character of the “I-ness”. This is to inquire into the seed from which everything comes out. It also means to embrace consciousness, and thus the world of our experiences as the only way to come to a deeper understanding of this “so-called” objective world and how we came into it.
I find this dialog valuable because it so clearly expresses that the world of phenomena as we perceive it does not hold the key to what we are yearning for.
This next passage sums it up and how one then lives in the world as the understanding of Reality matures:

Questioner: My fear is not being able to love or be loved.
Nisargadatta: Please understand, feeling love for others, consciously and deliberately, cannot be done. That feeling of love must be understood and then love will unfold itself. Nisargadatta: Immortality is beyond time and space; in that timeless, spaceless existence there is no entry for the five elements, for light or darkness, for the sun or the moon. Timeless, spaceless existence doesn’t know that it is. That is reality, That is the truth.
In any amount of meditation, etc., you do not remain in your real state; it is only by firm conviction that you are the highest that you stabilize in the Ultimate. Continue reading
Nisargadatta: You must come to a firm decision. You must forget the thought that you are a body and be only the knowledge “I Am,” which has no form, no name. Just be. When you stabilize in that beingness it will give you all the knowledge and all the secrets to you, and when the secrets are given to you, you transcend the beingness, and you, the Absolute, will know that you are also not the consciousness. Having gained all this knowledge, having understood what is what, a kind of quietude prevails, a tranquility. Beingness is transcended, but beingness is available. Continue reading
Nisargadatta: When I talk to you, don’t try to understand from the body-mind identity. Your true state is always there; it has not gone anywhere. Although you did not know it was there, and now you know it is there, you have done nothing. It is always there.
On my true, whole, homogeneous state just a small ripple appeared, the news came, “I Am.” That news made all the difference, and I started knowing this; but now I have known my true state, so I understand my true state first, and then I understand that this ripple is coming and going on my true state. While, in your case, you take interest in the ripple and don’t take interest in your true state. Continue reading
Nisargadatta Maharaj: When is there an ego? The ego is there when you have certain reactions. You take delivery of whatever is observed spontaneously. You cling to it, register it, then only is there an ego.
You see some building material lying on the road – you think that you are a carpenter and you start figuring how to use that material; the thought process has started, ego starts. If you are nobody, you will not bother about the building material – you will just observe it and go your way. Once it is out of sight it is out of mind; but when you receive that delivery, you cogitate over it, ego has started.
Visitor: So when it comes to the utility of what is seen, that’s when the ego comes into being?
N: Yes, that is its nature.
