How to Start a Spiritual Awakening

Re-Posted from Russell Bradley

“One day, an old man was walking along the beach in the early morning and noticed the tide had washed thousands of starfish up on the shore. Up ahead in the distance he spotted a boy who appeared to be gathering up the starfish, and one by one tossing them back into the ocean.

He approached the boy and asked him why he spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time.

starfish (1)The boy replied, “If these starfish are left out here like this they will bake in the sun, and by this afternoon they will all be dead.”

The old man gazed out as far as he could see and responded, “But, there must be hundreds of miles of beach and thousands of starfish. You can’t possibly rescue all of them. What difference is throwing a few back going to make anyway?”

The boy then held up the starfish he had in his hand and replied, “It makes a difference to this one.”

Jesus said “If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it … he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.” (Matthew 18:13-14 NIV)

Jesus started a spiritual awakening with these words, “I only do what I see the Father doing. What the Father does, the Son does.” (John 5:19 The Message)

Sense what the Father is doing and respond. Be moved by compassion for the next “one” you find. It always makes a difference.”

  4. I know exactly how that little boy felt, I’ve been him many a time and sadly people have said to me “why do you do that, it’s pointless.” Well, I know from experience it is not pointless. It doesn’t matter if its a starfish, a butterfly or another human being, all life is sacred and no creature deserves to be left to die when I have had the ability to save it. Care about the little things and the big things will be taken care of 🙂

  5. So simple, so sweet. How do I make a difference for “this one?” By emulating this simple example, we become ONE. That is the spiritual awakening that is occurring now in our world — one sheep, one starfish at a time. Blessings, Alia
